John Ollie

John Ollie, 79, long-time resident of Oak Harbor, passed peacefully in San Pedro, Calif., on Sept., 6, 2005.

John was born Feb. 25, 1926, in Logan County, W.V. He entered the Navy, and World War II, during his 16th year. He fought in numerous Pacific Campaigns, earning three Purple Hearts, a Bronze Star, and many other military honors and decorations. Upon his honorable discharge he became a Union Ironworker with Local 433 out of Los Angeles.

He briefly played “farm league” baseball for such teams as the White Sox, and was a semi-professional boxer as well. John traveled the world extensively, living in places such as Spain, Turkey, China, and South Africa building communications towers. He spoke seven languages fluently due to his travels. One of his jobs brought him to Seattle where he met his future wife, Margaret Carr. They married and moved to California in the late 1950’s. John was active in the community as a Little League coach for his son’s and daughter’s teams. He was also a third degree Master Mason, and member of the Elk’s and VFW.

In 1976 John and his family moved to Oak Harbor. John loved fishing, outdoor activities, gardening, reunions with his WWII ship’s crew, the “Unholy Four,” vacationing, and the simple pleasures in life. He was a wonderful, kind-hearted man, and a loving father and friend. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

John was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Louise “Peggie” Ollie, his son, Stephen Thomas “Steve” Ollie, and his granddaughter, Kristin Mara “Krissie” Ollie. He is survived by his daughter, Tegan Mara Ollie of Oak Harbor, his son, John Garrett Ollie of San Pedro, and grandchildren, Jason Ollie, Shayla Beesley, Rio Ollie, Arispa Davis, John and Charlotte Shelor.

A memorial and remembrance of his life will be held on Friday, Sept. 16, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the VFW, located on 3037 Goldie Road, Oak Harbor. All who knew John are invited to attend. In lieu of flowers please feel free to bring a modest finger food to share.
