Oak Harbor Garden Club’s Patchwork Petals flower show intoduced people to the wide world of gardening on Whidbey Saturday.
More than 175 visitors viewed displays of 126 specimens of horticulture in bloom and 24 floral designs presented by club members the Standard Flower show at IOOF Hall during Holland Happening. Nationally accredited judges from National Garden Clubs, Inc., awarded Top Exhibitor ribbons.
In horticulture, Awards of Merit went to Genevieve Davison for helleborus Corsicus, Sharon Pursel for red tulip and Connie Leonhardi for blue violet Saintpaulia, ‘Blue Giant.’ The arboreal award was presented to Inez Morach for her red rhododendron ‘Chevalier Felix de Sauvage.’ The award for horticultural excellence went to Leonhardi.
In floral design, Designer’s Choice Award went to Joyce Terrell for her arrangement of an orange tulip with equisetum in ‘Rail Fence’ and the Table Artistry Award went to Eileen Oldham for her mass of colorful spring flowers in a basket in the Sunbonnet Sue functional al fresco children’s picnic. The Educational Award went to Judith Juno for her display ‘Garden Art,’ a how-to-do-it instruction and a collection of concrete turtles by club members for the finishing touch in their gardens.
Judges were Elizabeth Timmer from Lynden, Joyce Johnson from Mount Vernon and Rhonda Permenter from Freeland.
Visitors also enjoyed a variety of quilts displayed by Quilters on the Rock members and exhibits by Greenhouse Florist and Nursery, Great Escapes Landscaping and Waterfalls and Hummingbird Farm.
