Felix G. Camacho died at his home in Oak Harbor on Oct. 24, 2007, with his family by his bedside. Felix was born in Agana, Guam on March 15, 1923 to Vicente and Josefa (Guerrero) Camacho.
Felix was raised in Guam. At age 17, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving as a steward. He was eventually sent to a duty station in Hawaii. On Dec. 7, 1941, he was one of the fortunate Pearl Harbor survivors. He was married to Josefa Anderson on July 4, 1955, in Guam. He stayed in the Navy, serving in the Korean War and Vietnam and finally retired on Oct. 1, 1963, with 22 years of military service.
Felix joined the Merchant Marines after his Navy retirement, returning to sea for three more years. In 1968, Felix moved his family one last time, making Oak Harbor his home. He worked several jobs, including time with Island Construction and two canneries in Skagit County before obtaining a position as a custodian with the Oak Harbor School District. He remained with the district until his final retirement.
Felix loved to cook and one of his greatest enjoyments in life was entertaining family and friends. He shared a love for the out-of-doors with his family, spending time camping and fishing with them. He was also a great dancer and his other interests included gardening, playing poker, caring for animals and most of all his grandchildren.
Felix was a member of St. Augustine’s Catholic Church, the American Legion, George Morris Post 129 and the Fleet Reserve Branch 97, all of Oak Harbor.
Felix is survived by eight children: Terry Norris of Clarksville, Tenn., Jeovanni Camacho and wife Petra of Oak Harbor, Loren Camacho of Vacaville, Calif., Michael Camacho of Everett, Elizabeth Morris of Port Orchard, Raymond Camacho, Bernadette Mafnas and husband Raymond, and Vincent Camacho and wife Carmen, all of Oak Harbor. One sister, Josefa C. Leonguerrero of Monterey, Calif., 17 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren also survive. His beloved wife Josefa, preceded him in death in 2005, and nine brothers and sisters also predeceased him.
Visitation for family and friends will be held at Burley Funeral Chapel on Tuesday, Oct. 30, from noon to 5 p.m. Rosary will be recited at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church, Oak Harbor, at 7 p.m. Tuesday evening with a reception following. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church on Wednesday, Oct. 31, at 10 a.m. with Rev. Philip Raether, Celebrant. Committal services with full military honors will follow at Maple Leaf Cemetery under the auspices of the NAS Whidbey Honor Guard. A reception will follow at the Parish Hall at St. Augustine’s. Arrangements are entrusted to Burley Funeral Chapel, Oak Harbor.
