Two days after suffering a gut-wrenching defeat to league foe Concrete, the Coupeville baseball team earned some satisfaction.
For the first time this season the Wolves’ bats came alive as a unit and they defeated Orcas Island 12-1 on the road.
“We had a big meeting after the loss and they decided to take it on themselves, they decided to step it up,†CHS head coach Willie Smith said.
The Wolves did just that on Thursday.
Coupeville cranked out 10 hits in five innings en route to its first league win of the season.
“We really played well, we made our adjustments and we finally hit the ball,†Smith said.
Coupeville was led by junior Casey Larson, who was 2-for-4 at the plate with four RBI. Sophomore Alex Evans was 3-for-4 with three RBI and junior Cory Black was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
Senior Mike Bagby pitched all five innings, allowing just three hits on six strikeouts.
“It was a huge load off their backs to come out and play like they knew they were capable of,†Smith said.

Concrete 6, Coupeville 4
Celebrations started one inning too early for the Coupeville baseball team Wednesday afternoon.
After rallying for three runs and breaking a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the sixth inning, an elated Wolfpack dugout had a 4-1 victory in its sights.
Concrete, however, wasn’t ready to give in.
The Lions rallied for five runs in the top of the seventh and sealed the deal in the bottom half of the inning for a 6-4 league win.
“Give them credit,†a visibly disappointed Smith said. “They stuck around, they did what they needed to do and scratched it out, that’s just the way it is.â€
Tied 1-1 in the bottom of the sixth, Coupeville’s bats came alive after having only two hits through five innings. A leadoff double from Evans was followed by a bunt base hit from senior Jack Armstrong and an RBI single from Black for a 2-1 lead. A walk from sophomore Kyle Wilcox was followed by a two RBI double from junior Tony Prosser. Wilcox was caught between third and home on the play, but managed to escape a rundown and score for the 4-1 lead. Prosser was 2-for-3 on the day with three RBI.
Unfortunately for the Wolves, Prosser’s second hit was the final CHS hit of the game.
Concrete, which struggled all day to find a groove against Wolfpack starter Cory Black, caught fire in the seventh. The Lions generated three of their six hits in the inning and used three walks, a hit batter and a balk to push them over the top. Concrete’s Ryan Beazizo provided the knock-out blow, drilling a deep two-run double to center field with two outs. His hit gave the Lions a 5-4 lead before they tacked on one more via a balk from relief pitcher Alex Evans.
Coupeville is now 1- 1 in the Northwest A/B and 2-5 overall. The Wolves play their next game at 4 p.m., Friday, April 7 at home against La Conner.
A makeup game for the March 24 cancellation at Darrington was rescheduled to 4 p.m., Wednesday, April 12.
