Tyson Boon is still in search of his first base hit of the season, but the Oak Harbor senior will gladly take what he got Wednesday night against Lake Stevens.
With two outs in the bottom of the eighth and a runner at third, Boon smacked a ground ball toward the Viking’s shortstop. The fielder bobbled the ball for an error and Boon hustled safely to first, scoring teammate Mark Radach for a 5-4, extra-inning victory.
“I’ve put the ball in play every time I’ve come up…I was just hoping to do it once more,†said Boon, who is now 0-for-17 this season.
Making the play that much sweeter, was the fact Boon pitched the entire eight innings for the Wildcats.
“I wanted to win it because I’d already told coach (Jim) Waller I wasn’t going back in,†he said. “That was the longest game I’ve ever pitched.â€
Boon threw 130 pitches for the Wildcats, giving up eight base hits and one walk, while collecting three strikeouts. He was shaky in the first inning, allowing two runs on four hits, but was nearly flawless after that. Lake Stevens managed just two more unearned runs off of him.
“He pitched a great game,†Waller said.
It wasn’t just the pitching that was superb for Oak Harbor. The bats finally came alive for the Wildcats, who collected 10 hits.
Trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the fourth, junior James Leach got things rolling for OHHS with a two-out, bloop RBI single. Oak Harbor followed that up with a three-run fifth inning to take the lead, 4-3.
Sophomore Johnny Encinas started the rally with an opposite field RBI double which was followed up by a sacrifice fly from junior Marshall Lobbestael and a RBI single from Radach.
Oak Harbor’s extra-inning win was set up after Radach reached on a error. That was followed up by a sacrifice bunt from senior Cameron Kays and a single from Leach.
Wednesday’s game was originally supposed to take place at Lake Stevens, but was moved to Oak Harbor because of poor field conditions. Last night’s game that was supposed to take place in Oak Harbor was moved to Lake Stevens.

2-for-3 at the plate with a three-run home run that put the Wildcats ahead for good in the fifth. Radach was 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Oak Harbor is now 3-4 in the Western Conference North and 5-6 overall.
Waller said he likes the direction his team is headed with some of the toughest competition behind them.
“The top three teams by the standings (Cascade, Snohomish, Monroe) we’ve already played and we’ve got everybody else left,†he said. “We’re hanging in there.â€
