I would like to comment on the letter by Ann Adams (News-Times, Oct. 9) regarding “Rambo” and his one man crusade against Iraq. Miss Adams, before you label President Bush as a Rambo-like character, I would suggest you watch the movie. Rambo was minding his own business when he was abused by a sadistic sheriff who did not like Rambo’s appearance.
People have a nasty habit of trying to rewrite history for a version which suits them. It looks like your version has the United States as being a pre- Sept. 9, 2001 country who enjoyed ignorance as to what was happening around it. We were attacked by evil for no other reason then hatred. After Sept. 11, President Bush, not Rambo, talked to his country and promised to eradicate all who threaten us regardless as to who they were or where they are. While the skyline over New York and the Capitol still smoldered and we counted our dead, people pointed fingers and asked who was to blame for allowing this horrific deed to take place. People across this nation demanded protection against other attacks.
President Bush took action to prevent more terrorist acts in the future. First, attack all suspected terrorist, groups supporting terrorist, and countries who harbor terrorist. Second, monitor all Muslims who are guests in our country and citizens who fit a certain profile. While these actions, though unfortunate, seem to be the best way to ensure the safety of our country, there are those who say; “Give peace a chance” and “Say no to Rambo,” while others protest the unfair treatment of a group who has already proved that there are individuals in their midst who, while enjoying the freedom which this country offers, are using this same freedom to their advantage to plot and kill without discretion.
President Bush has the most sophisticated intelligence network available. While it, like everything else, is not 100 percent perfect, it is the best we have. At least I am sure it is better then the one you have that says Iraq does not have nuclear weapons. I think that we should unite and support our president who, under the advice of his counsel, and the information provided by military intelligence, is trying to protect this country and this people. However, if you still feel that you are safe from further attacks, turn your other cheek, I’m sure it would make a tempting target.
