The PBY Memorial Association will hear from an aviator turned interior designer when members meet Tuesday, April 22, at 11:30 a.m. at the CPO Club.
Douglas Bennett began his naval career at Sand Point in June 1942 as a naval air cadet. Following stints at Pasco and Pensacoloa naval air stations, he received his wings and was commissioned in March 1943.
Bennett received PBY training at Jacksonville, Fla., and was with VP-72 in the Central and South Pacific theaters of World War II, including Tarawa, Makin, Kwajalein, Enewetok and the Caroline islands.
Bennett later piloted the PB4YI seaplane at Naval Air Training Command at Hutchinson, Kan., ending his naval career at Whidbey Island Naval Air Station in VP-91.
After retiring, he went on to become a graphics, industrial and interior designer and taught at the University of Washington and Seattle University. His work has been displayed at several prominent museums in the U.S. and England. He is a member of the ANA Olympic Squadron.
