A shutdown at the Anacortes Water Treatment Plant Friday shouldn’t affect water customers in Oak Harbor, but officials are urging residents to conserve.

The Anacortes Water Treatment Plant has scheduled a complete shutdown of the drinking water treatment plant and the supply of water to the city of Oak Harbor’s transmission system on Friday, Sept. 28 from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The reason for the shutdown is because Puget Sound Energy will be shutting down all electrical power service to the water plant to perform maintenance.

Anacortes owns and operates the water treatment plant on the Skagit River near Mount Vernon. The city of Oak Harbor and the Whidbey Island Naval Air Station contract with Anacortes for water, which travels through miles of pipes to get to the island.

customers should not experience any interruption of water service. However,

due to the length of the shut down, customers are encouraged to conserve water.

The informational water signs will be at “Stage 1” indicating voluntary water conservation.
