Editor,

Decades ago, Coupeville opened up a state of the art firehouse. Today, the Boys and Girls Club occupies the building, providing a safe landing spot for the youth of Coupeville. As a parent and a teacher, the thought of kids finding safety in a firehouse is comforting, even nostalgic. Anyone who has been there in the late afternoon knows just how busy and active the club is, with its energetic kids and enthusiastic staff.

A dedicated group of adults, people who live in and grew up in our community, work tirelessly to give Coupeville kids engaging, enjoyable, and safe activities. Critical before school and after school care, themed summer camps, and our local basketball league are a few of the basics that the Boys and Girls Club provide. My daughter, and many of my friends’ and colleague’s children, benefit from this inexpensive but quality service, a service that does much to bring kids together.

The sad reality, however, is that that old firehouse is cramped and noisy and loud. It also houses the local food bank! It’s time to find a newer, bigger, quieter place for the Boys and Girls Club to do their good work. Our kids deserve that much.
