The Island Flyers tumbling and trampoline team opened its competitive season with strong showings in its first two meets.

At the Finding Nemo Meet in Bellevue, Juliet Aspery (level 5 tumbling, 13 and up) and Lauren Aspery (level 7 trampoline, 13 and up) captured titles, while Kelly Gruenwald placed second in three 12-and-under events.

Newcomers Kayli Benedetto (second place, level 4 trampoline and level 5 double mini) and Natalie Hahn (third, level 5 trampoline) made strong debuts.

Aspery won Athlete of the Meet honors for her title in her first meet at level 7.

Saturday, Feb. 4, at the Paws and Claws Invitational in Kirkland, awards were given for the entire level regardless of age.

Winners included Hailee Blau (level 5 tumbling) and Benedetto (level 4 trampoline).

Other Flyers finishing in the top three were Amaya Rittierodt (second, level 7 double mini; third, level 6 tumbling), Lilly Hammitt (second, level 4 tumbling; third, level 5 trampoline) McKenzie Meyer (third, level 5 tumbling) and Gruenwald (third, level 4 tumbling).

Benedetto was named Athlete of the Meet for completing her first solo tumbling pass in competition and improving her trampoline score by over two points.

The team’s next competition will be in Mount Vernon Feb. 25.
