In response to the recent letter, “Cell phones aren’t the only distraction,” evidently Mr. Merrill and I do not drive in the same area, as one of us needs to see a good optometrist.

Several times I have had to sound my horn to move a driver on when a green light appears. These drivers, mostly women, are the only ones on the streets as far as they are concerned. These are the same people that will block the aisles at the grocery stores, so involved in their “very important” conversations that they forget to respect others.

If these phones create no problems on our highways, then why have so many states outlawed them? These laws were passed based on police reports, showing the many accidents caused by drivers trying to drive while using these phones, so who are we to dispute these reports? I understand that we have one of these same laws pending in our state.

We have enough hazards on our highways without creating more and making excuses for them. No phone call is so important that we have to jeopardize the safety of others, rather than take a couple of minutes, pull to the side and complete our call.
