Farm transition includes the public

The Port of Coupeville and the Greenbank Farm Management Group (GFMG) have worked together since the Greenbank Farm was purchased in 1997. As the senior representatives of these organizations, we want to assure the residents of Island County that the port and the GFMG are continuing to work closely together to ensure each organization is best-positioned to contribute to the preservation, operations and community usage of the Greenbank Farm. Both organizations are passionately committed to ensuring the farm continues to provide economic opportunities for local entrepreneurs and preserving the beauty and history of this amazing Island County treasure for the generations to come.

The port and the GFMG each bring unique expertise and resources to the Greenbank Farm. Together, we have contributed to bringing the farm to its current excellent material and stable financial condition. Jointly we believe there is an opportunity to design a better division of responsibilities that capitalizes on the strengths of each organization by having the port become more involved in on-site operations.

Accordingly, the GFMG has approached the board of commissioners of the port with a proposal to terminate the lease and management services agreements before they expire in 2014. The board of commissioners has responded affirmatively to this proposal and negotiations to that purpose have begun.

We jointly wish to assure the residents of Island County the long-term interests of the Greenbank Farm are paramount in our considerations and we will afford ample opportunities for public input before we conclude the transition.
