Chorus Line

Playhouse musical production brings rough, real Broadway life to Oak Harbor

They will shuffle in, stretch out and get ready to put their hopes and dreams on the line as they vie to be a part of a Broadway chorus line.

The Whidbey Playhouse production of “A Chorus Line,” opening Friday, will open the backstage door to the tough life behind the glitz and glamour of being a Broadway dancer.

The show follows a 1975 audition in which director, Zach (Douglas Cole), wants the dancers to reveal more than their dance moves during this audition. He wants the truth, the raw reality about their lives and what shapes their lives.

Dancers like Val (Caitlena Lewis) share the romance, hardships, awkwardness and triumphs that brought them to the stage.

“It’s pretty scandalous with everyone trying to top each other,” said Nikki Cook, who plays Maggie.

The cast of 23 has been putting in overtime to perfect the challenging vocals and elaborate dance numbers associated with the acclaimed musical.

“The longevity of this production stands in its message that no matter where you come from everyone has their hopes and dreams no matter what baggage you bring,” said director Allenda Jenkins.
