Robert Joseph Carroll

Robert Joseph “Bob” Carr, 73, died at his home in Oak Harbor on Sept. 11, 2007, following a lengthy illness. Bob was born Dec. 26, 1933, in Worchester, Mass., to Frederick J. and Doris G. Carr.

Bob left Massachusetts and moved to Phoenix, Ariz., where he was employed with the Phoenix Police Department as a police officer for nearly 20 years. He left Arizona and owned a tavern in California for a short time before moving to Oak Harbor in 1974.

Bob worked for Skagit Steel and the Anacortes Refinery and then for Mutual of Omaha as an insurance agent, before finding his true calling. Bob worked as a salesman for the Oak Harbor Sears store for 17 years. In 1987, he was forced to retire due to ill health.

Bob was an avid model railroader and founded the Whidbey Island Model Railroad Club. He was also a long-time member of the Skagit Grange. He was married to M. Diane Appelget in Oak Harbor on Oct. 21, 1989.

Bob is survived by his wife Diane of Oak Harbor and four children: Rick Carr of San Diego, Cindy Carr of Hawaii, Debra Carr of Flagstaff, Ariz., and Wendy Carr of Phoenix; stepchildren, Pamela Lutz of Kent, Tabetha Smith of Oak Harbor, Tim Lutz of Wenatchee, and Ted Lutz of Oak Harbor; and 28 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

Bob requested no formal funeral services be conducted. Cremation was held with private family burial to follow at Maple Leaf Cemetery, Oak Harbor. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Burley Funeral Chapel, Oak Harbor.
