Letter: Bulldozing encampment was wrong

Editor,

The Hoffman Road incident is a ridiculous abuse of power. Hoffmantonians pose a threat as an eye sore and damaging the reputation of Oak Harbor as a former top ten vacation spot, but the spot they’d chosen was outside of town officially and as off to themselves as possible.

The shutdown of access to the road as police, tow trucks and construction crews tore down, bulldozed and buried with hauled in dirt from the surrounding quarry made it difficult to document but regardless of cleanliness, personal appeal or aesthetic… these were people’s homes.

Not only does this not help the city of Oak Harbor (they will no doubt move inward to recover), but they themselves will have to start from scratch. The culture clash could escalate if they choose to relocate and the city will be liable seeing as they knew, know and even tried to bribe those living there with relocation to another city (not my monkey not my circus mentality?). The posted notices were about towing, but the bulldozing? Brutal. Just saying.
