Oak Harbor’s volleyball team made short work of Arlington Tuesday evening, notching its second conference win of the season.
The Lady Wildcats started out strong and despite a slight lapse in the third game, polished off the Eagles 25-8, 25-18, 25-20 in front of a large, home-court crowd.
Clair Thiel was a major force at the net both offensively and defensively.
The 6-1 junior employed both a soft touch and a power slam to score points. Her leaping ability on the defensive side of the net gave the Eagles major problems.
“The team was awesome and we played really well together,†she said.
Sophomore Jennifer “Jumpin†Jansen, also 6-1, played a major role at the net as well.
“We did really good and we’re
going to be really strong this year,†she said.
The Lady Wildcats missed some easy shots in the third game allowing Arlington to tie the score three times, but pulled together as a team and the Eagles were unable to take the lead.
“They’re coming along and we’re getting things figured out,†Wildcats’ coach Kerri Molitor said. “They have great attitudes and are working hard. We have some things that we are working on fixing. I have a lot of talent, we just have to keep it going.â€
Molitor praised the play of senior Lizzy Van Dyke in the match.
“Lizzy is our only senior and she’s amazing,†said Molitor. “She’s our leader and she is such a good kid. She’s a big part of the team.â€
With the score knotted at 20-20 in the third game, Thiel scored a
point on a block to put Oak Harbor back on served and Van Dyke served the match out with four straight points.
“I think have a good team this year and its really a lot fun playing together,†she said.
Oak Harbor played a match at Wilson High School on Friday and are competing in today’s Kentlake Tournament.
“We have 12 girls on the varsity squad and they all have different roles, but each one of them is a member of the team,†Molitor said. “They see that and they all support each other.â€
The Lady Wildcats return to their home court on Tuesday to tip off at 7 p.m. against Mount Lake Terrace in a non-league match
