Oak Harbor Middle School students participated in a school wide anti-drug/drug-free contest. Entries included several posters and poems. Oak Harbor Middle School Preventionist Debby Spence and DARE Officer Steve Nordstrand organized the contest and awarded prizes to all who participated. Winners Shukriyyah Greaves and Chip Merrill were presented their awards at a schoolwide recognition assembly.
The Drinker
He drank all night and he drank all day
To him it eased the pain away
He had no friends he had no cheers
All he had were all his fears
He thought it would be cool
To drink and act like a fool
But then he was losing it all
When he realized this he began to bawl
He decided to fix his life
And no longer live it in strife
So he went to his friend the only one who cared
For she was the one whose life he shared
She did her best to understand
“You must quit now” was her demand
He was doing great, he was doing well
So he called her up on his cell
She was so proud of his transformation
She invited him and some friends to a celebration
And now every time he is offered a beer
“Not now, not ever again” he would cheer!

Invitation
I was invited to cough out my lungs
To ruin my smile
To darken my gums
To be addicted for a while
To walk another mile
To lose others’ trust
To steal if I must
My teeth begin to rust
My breath smells like must
I was invited to be dumped by my friends
I was invited to feel isolated in the end
I was the one who was punished by mom and dad
I was invited to make others mad
Why would I hide it
I was invited
I’m one, no two, no five steps closer to being cool
Acting like a fool
To break another rule
To use escaping like it’s a tool
I’m closer to getting an “F” in class
I’m even closer to being six feet under grass
So the next time someone offers you to get high
To be cool ‘cause that’s what they said
That’s your invitation, you just been invited
