New textbooks for possible use in Oak Harbor’s math and reading programs at the middle and high school level will be available for public review beginning March 9.

Teams of teachers, principals and parents have reviewed different educational materials for the last several months, states a news release from the school district. Educational publishing companies develop a series of textbooks, DVDs, Web sites and worksheets to create a complete curriculum.

The curriculum review teams rely on state alignment and local math and reading goals to narrow the options.

The review takes place every 7 to 10 years for each subject. It costs about $30,000 per grade level to replace all the materials for each subject at the secondary level.

Materials for algebra, geometry and algebra II for grades eight to 11, will be available for review at the Oak Harbor School District office. The final candidates include Holt Math Publishing and Key Press Discovering. The last secondary math adoption took place in 2002.

People can also review the language arts curriculum, for grades six to 12. The three candidates include McDougall Littell, Glencoe and Prentice Hall. The last language arts curriculum review and replacement was 1999-2001.

Kurt Schonberg, director of teaching and learning for Oak Harbor schools, said the curriculum review teams will take community feedback into consideration for the final decision.

The public can fill out a sheet at the district office.

“Ultimately, the end users are the students. So we want to get the perspective of parents and community members,” Schonberg said.

The district office is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
