A youth pheasant hunt for those licensed hunters under the age of 16 will be held Sept. 20 and 21 commencing at 8 a.m. each day at the Arnold Farm release site south of Oak Harbor. Young hunters wanting to participate should be accompanied by an adult age 18 or older.

A limited number of experienced mentor hunters with dogs will be available to accompany youth hunters who do not have an adult with them.

A senior, age 65 and older, pheasant hunt will be held Sept. 22 through 26 also at Arnold Farm commencing at 8 a.m. each day.

To get to the Arnold Farm release site, take Highway 20 East out of Oak Harbor about 3.5 miles to Arnold Road and then take Arnold Road .6 miles to Zylstra Road. The release site is approximately .5 miles and the parking area is on the right.

The general pheasant season begins at 8 a.m. Sept. 27 at the following Whidbey Island release sites: Arnold Farm, including a small site about a quarter mile east of the Arnold Farm release site on Zylstra Road, Bayview, Ebey Prairie, and three NAS Whidbey Island sites which are OLF Coupeville and the Upper and Lower Game Ranges on the Sea Plane Base.

The NAS sites require special hunting permits which can be obtained by both civilian and military hunters at the hunting registration meeting at the NAS Gallery Golf Course located on Golf Course Road in Oak Harbor between 5:30 and 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 24. Hunters must present a DOD or state-issued photo identification, a Washington small game license and pheasant (odd/even) permit.

There is an $11.00 fee. No licenses will be available at the registration meeting.

Hunters are reminded that the odd/even system for hunters under age 65 is in effect at all Whidbey Island sites and that non-toxic shot is mandatory.

Elks club soccer shoot

The Oak Harbor Elks Club is hosting a soccer shoot from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 13, at Fort Nugent Park.

The shoot is open to both boys and girls in four age groups: ages 7-and-under, 8 and 9, 10 and 11, and 12 to 13. This event is open to the public, but each contestant has to be registered by a parent or guardian.

Fall tryouts for NWAC

The North Whidbey Aquatic Club (NWAC) will be holding free tryouts during the month of September.

Those interested in becoming a club member can attend on Monday, Tuesday or Thursday from 4:45 to 5:30 p.m. at John Vanderzicht Memorial Pool.

Minimum requirements are the ability to swim 25 meters in freestyle and backstroke.

The emphasis of the NWAC is on skill acquisition, physical fitness and fun in a safe, professionally coached environment. Swimmers from 6 to 18 are welcome and the first two weeks are free.

YMCA golf tourney Sept. 13

The Armed Services YMCA of Whidbey Island is hosting a golf tournament Saturday, Sept. 13, at the Gallery Golf Course.

This tournament is open to the public.

The cost to enter is $25, which is tax deductible, plus green fees, if you register prior to the tournament. Entry fee on the day of the tournament is $30.

The entry fee includes hors d’ oeuvers, drinks and prizes.

The event begins at 7:30 a.m. with check-in and tee assignments.

Golfers will tee off between 8 and 10:15 a.m.

The tournament is limited to the first 75, so get your registration in early.

Registrations will be accepted at the YMCA, 540 S.E. Pioneer Way, Oak Harbor, or at the Gallery Golf Course pro shop.
