Training flights at Outlying Field near Coupeville are resuming after several weeks of inactivity.

The airstrip had been closed in August to allow work crews to replace several concrete slabs on the runway, according to a news release from Naval Air Station Whidbey Island.

Now that the construction project is complete air crews for the EA-18G Growler and EA-6B Prowlers to continue their field carrier landing practice.

In operation since 1942, Outlying Field is critical to jet pilots as they prepare for aircraft carrier qualifications and deployments around the world, according to the news release.
