Update: Oak Harbor tops Archbishop Murphy / Swim and dive

The Oak Harbor High School swim and dive team started the fall season with an 83-67 win over Archbishop Murphy Tuesday, Sept. 17, at John Vanderzicht Pool.

Caitlin Dennen led Oak Harbor by winning two individual events (50-meter freestyle, 32.69; 100 backstroke, 1:20.4) and swimming on two first-place relay teams with Frances Empinado, Grace Chargualaf and Casey Cabigting (medley, 2:32.38; 400 free, 5:14.79).

Chargualaf added a win in the 400 free (6:08), and Megan Kunze finished first in the 100 free (1:25.16).

“Tuesday was a great start to the season,” assistant coach Debra Vaughn said. “It was nice to get a win in the books. Archbishop Murphy doesn’t have too many swimmers right now, but the ones they brought were seasoned and fast, and they provided some serious competition to our top swimmers.

“Our senior swimmers (Empinado, Dennen, Chargualaf) provided outstanding leadership at the meet. We have a large group of young, inexperienced swimmers. For many of them this was their first meet ever.”

Oak Harbor hosts Lake Stevens at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24.

Second: Empinado, 200 individual medley, 3:05.87; Chargualaf, 100 butterfly, 1:25.37; 200 free relay (Kunze, Madelyn Ward, Lindsey Griffith, Hannah Mayne), 2:39.44.

Third: Cabigting, 200 free, 3:17.23; 100 fly, 1:42.07; Griffith, 400 free, 7:18.44; 100 breaststroke, 1:57.69; Amber Leavitt, 100 back, 2:10.22; medley relay (Kunze, Ward, Mayne, Griffith), 3:03.81.

Fourth: Sadie Gunter, 200 free, 4:31.4; Erika Wright, 100 back, 2:41.22; Mayne, 100 breast, 2:35.37.

Fifth: Mayne, 50 free, 46.34.

Sixth: Leavitt, 50 free, 49.09.
