Home winning streak snapped by Bruins

Prior to Oak Harbor High School’s Friday night non-league football game against Cascade, head coach Jay Turner said the Bruins were a tough team and the Wildcats would be in for a test.A former member of the WesCo North, Cascade lived up to its pre-game billing and defeated Oak Harbor 15-10 in the opening game of the season for both teams.

The loss snapped Oak Harbor’s undefeated record at Wildcat Memorial Stadium and was a learning experience for the young Wildcat squad.Cascade quarterback Aaron Frye was a one-man wrecking crew and lived up to his billing as one of the top high school quarterbacks in the state.

The senior signal caller tossed a 60-yard scoring pass to Spencer Duncan with 1:24 remaining in the opening quarter and then scored on a 13-yard dash at the 10:41 mark of the fourth quarter to put a cap on Cascade’s scoring.

In between, Frye had a 47-yard touchdown run called back on a holding penalty with 4:48 remaining in the game.The Bruins held an 8-0 halftime lead until Kevin Flavin got the Wildcats on the board booting a 22-yard field goal with 2:13 left in the third period.

After Frye’s second touchdown, Oak Harbor’s Stephen Lewis cut the lead to 15-10 hauling in a 37-yard scoring strike from J Jordan with 2:18 left in the game.

The Wildcats had an opportunity with 45 seconds remaining in the contest recovering a fumble at their own 40-yard line, but Frye intercepted a Jordan pass with 4 seconds left on on the clock to put the game away.

The Wildcats (0-1) open WesCo North play Friday, Sept. 12, traveling to Monroe to face the Bearcats.
