Virginia Alice Martratt

Virginia Alice Martratt died Oct. 23, 2009, at Whidbey Island Manor at the age of 88, following a lengthy illness. She was born March 20, 1921 in Voorhesville, N.Y., to Wilford and Alice Rendo.

Virginia was raised in Albany, N.Y., where she graduated from high school. She married Charles Martratt on April 11, 1939 in Albany. She worked for Lerner Clothing Stores. In 1950, she and Charles moved to Billings, Mont., where she worked in sales for the J.C. Penny Company until her retirement in 1963.

Virginia and Charles moved to Oak Harbor in 1987. She and Charles celebrated 70 years of marriage on April 11, 2009. She enjoyed oil painting and crocheting until macular degeneration curtailed her activities. She was a member of St. Stephen’s Anglican Church, the Christian Women’s Organization and the church Bible study group. She also was a member of the Everett Assembly 242, Social Order of the Beauceant and a Star Point of the Order of Eastern Star, Billings Friendship Chapter 123.

Survivors include her husband Charles of Oak Harbor; one son, Charles A. Martratt and wife Joyce of Guam; a daughter, Sherrie Lyn Gentry and husband Frank of Stanwood; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and three nieces, Carol Meyer and husband Jerry of Oak Harbor, and Donna Dove and Delores Loos, both of Billings, Mont. One brother Harold Rendo and one sister Marion Mahoney preceded her in death.

Memorial services for Virginia will be held at St. Stephen’s Anglican Church on Friday, Oct. 30, at 1 p.m. with Rev. Paul Orritt officiating. Cremation was held with burial to follow at Maple Leaf Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Stephen’s Anglican Church or Skagit Hospice. Arrangements entrusted to Burley Funeral Chapel, Oak Harbor.
