James Carter, 59, passed away November 15, 2012, while working in the profession he loved. He is survived by his mother, Treva Carter, his sister Christine Broder, and his three children: Jayme, Ivy, and Jak Carter. James was born May 20th 1953, in Providence, Rhode Island to his parents Nick and Treva Carter.
James spent his childhood on Whidbey Island. As a young boy he would help the Sherman’s on their farm. He attended Oak Harbor High School, where he was first chair trumpet in the band, and graduated in 1971.
Shortly after graduation James joined the US Navy. His father, who was a retired naval officer, inducted him into the Navy after his 18th birthday. He served in the Navy for 4 years, and then moved to California.
James moved back to Whidbey Island in 2002. He owned and operated his own landscaping company, JC’s Maintenance. His children have said that they will miss his bear hugs, smile, and daffy duck impressions. He will be deeply missed as a son, brother, and friend. His friends have commented that he is “A man with a heart of gold”, that he was an “All time fishing bud”, that he was “My fishing mentor”, and a “Gentle soul.”
He is also fondly remembered as a favorite Coupeville fisherman, you could always find him down on the beach at Ebey’s Landing fishing for salmon. He always had his fishing pole in his truck with him.
James was a man who appreciated the beauty of nature and had a compassion for animals; he would even save baby bunnies from the cats. He loved to make people smile, oftentimes bringing tokens of his appreciation: dried lavender, smoked salmon, and freshly cut roses. He also liked to help anyone in need.
A memorial service for James was held Wednesday, November 21st at the Oak Harbor First United Methodist Church with Pastor David Johnson as Celebrant. Donations may be made to Washington State Parks.
