Betty Ungemach Jones

Betty Ungemach Jones, 83, died Jan. 28, 2011, at Careage of Whidbey, Coupeville, following a lengthy illness. Betty was born April 21, 1927 in Ridgefield, Wash., to Lincoln and Joy Ungemach. At the age of 16, Betty left Ridgefield to travel to San Diego to attend to her brother who was wounded in Korea. While in San Diego, she was hired as a street car operator.

Betty eventually returned to the Northwest, settling in Seattle where she worked for an insurance agent and also at an office in Portland. She also spent several years in Salem before moving back to Seattle and then on to Mountlake Terrace. She worked in the Redmond area for many years.

In 1990, Betty retired and joined her father on Whidbey, settling in Coupeville. She lived for a time at Cam-Bey Apartments until she moved to the home of her daughter Sharon. For the past four years, she was a resident of Careage of Whidbey. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Oak Harbor.

Betty loved to play card games, crochet, knit, collect dolls, and was an avid reader who enjoyed true murder mysteries by Ann Rule. Betty loved to take trips for California on Highway 101 and also enjoyed spending time at Moclips on the Washington coast. She was an active tutor for school children and also served as the bookkeeper for the Methodist Church for many years.

Betty is survived by one daughter, Sharon Biller and husband Joe of Coupeville; one son, Eldridge Jones III and wife Babs of Oak Harbor; six grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Feb. 1 at Wallin Funeral Chapel, Oak Harbor, with Pastor Dave Johnson of the First United Methodist Church officiating. A reception was also held at the funeral home with burial following at Sunnyside Cemetery, Coupeville.
