Anna Marie Matteson

Anna Marie Matteson, 92, died March 8, 2004, at Careage of Whidbey, Coupeville, Washington. She was born Sept. 29, 1911, in Bremerton to Harry and Della (Hambley) White.

Anna graduated from high school in Bremerton and began work at the Naval shipyard in Bremerton, working as a secretary. In 1946, she moved to Seattle, where she worked as a legal secretary. She was married to John E. Matteson in San Francisco. They moved to Oak Harbor in the early 1960’s. John worked as a jeweler for Marshall’s Jewelry and Anna began a federal civil service career at Whidbey Island Naval Air Station.

Anna retired as administrative assistant to the NAS Whidbey Communications Office in 1976. She was a past president of the Legal Secretaries Association of Seattle. She enjoyed golf reading and cats. Cats were her love. She was constantly adopting strays and participated in all animal shelter and adoption programs on the island. She also enjoyed redecorating her home. She was a member of St. Augustine’s Catholic Church of Oak Harbor.

Anna is survived by one daughter Sandy Grantano of Petaluma, California; two grandsons, Anthony “Tony” Grantano of Vallejo, Calif., and Chris and Sue Grantano of Petaluma, Calif., and one step-granddaughter Cheryl Grantano of Foster City, Calif. Her husband, John, one sister and one niece preceded her in death.

Cremation was held with private family inurnment to follow in California at a later date.
