Traffic slowed on Highway 20 Monday afternoon as drivers and passengers peered out at the aftermath of a one-car accident, illuminated by the flashing red, blue and white lights of police and emergency vehicles.

Shirley Jolly lost control of her silver Honda Civic as she traveled northbound on Highway 20 near Waterloo Road.

According to an Island County sheriff’s deputy at the scene, 80-year-old Jolly veered off the road and hit a culvert, launching her car into the air. The Honda came to rest, right-side-up, in a ditch on the highway’s grassy shoulder. No other cars appeared to be involved in the wreck.

Weather was not considered a factor in the accident, which occurred about 3:30 p.m., just prior to a short-lived hail storm. Officers and EMTs were pummeled with hail as the teams worked to secure Jolly to a stretcher.

Jolly reported that she did not recall any details of the incident and was transported to Whidbey General Hospital.
