Wildcats fall to Snohomish 6-1

Once again the Oak Harbor girls soccer team took an early lead but was unable to sustain the momentum.

In their second home match of the season on Thursday against Snohomish, Brooke Dewitt beat the Lady Panthers’ goal keeper Madison Goverde less than six minutes into the contest, but after that it was all Snohomish.

The Lady Panthers scored three goals in the first half and three more in the second to defeat Oak Harbor 6-1.

The Wildcats are 0-3 in WesCo matches.

“We moved the ball beautifully tonight, but we were really weak on defense in this game,” said Wildcats’ coach Gretchen Hanson. “I think if we could have held them defensively, our offensive attack was a threat to them.”

MaryJo Mangiameli fed Dewitt with a nice crossing pass and the junior forward put the ball in the low left-hand corner of the net.

“That was our first goal of the season and it felt pretty good,” Dewitt said. “It was a good set up and I had a good assist. We started off a little rough, but played hard the whole game.”

Snohomish’s Carmen Hansen tied the score with a goal off a throw in at the 28:08 mark in the first half and Lacee Ross put the Panthers in front to stay with a goal a little over five minutes later after a scramble in front of the Oak Harbor net.

The Wildcats simply wore down in the second half and the ball was in Oak Harbor’s half of the field for most of the 40 minutes of play.

“We have some things we need to work on,” Hanson said. “We’re young in the back and we’re learning. But I think half way through the season you should check again. You might just see a different team.”

Oak Harbor squares off today at Everett and returns to Memorial Stadium on Tuesday to play Stanwood. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
