Vandals target buildings, bunnies

Vandals used fire, spray paint and even a fire extinguisher to cause damage in Langley.

Vandals on a spring-break crime spree used fire, spray paint and even a fire extinguisher to cause damage in Langley and surrounding areas, according to Langley police.

A witness reported seeing three juvenile suspects. All the cases appear to be connected, according to police. Witnesses with any information about the acts of vandalism are encouraged to contact ICOM’s non-emergency number at 360-321-4400.

At about 5 p.m. on April 4, police responded to a report that someone had tried to burn a park bench at the upper area of Castle Park off Maxwelton Road.

Then in the morning, police received more reports of more acts of vandalism in two different locations, with the Whidbey Island Fairgrounds bearing the brunt of the damage.

“The thing that breaks my heart most is they were discharging a fire extinguisher into rabbit burrows and it’s baby season,” said David Stern, marketing and event coordinator for the fairgrounds. “That’s just cruel.”

Langley Police Chief Tavier Wasser said in an email that there’s no indication any bunnies were injured or displaced, but he agreed it was a mean thing to do.

Vandals also discharged the fire extinguisher in a bathroom, causing it to be closed until further notice, according to Stern.

In addition, several buildings were also spray painted with graffiti, including a sexist vulgarity in the dog arena and a creepy smiley face on the Fiddle Faddle Barn.

Beyond the fairgrounds, the vandals sprayed graffiti on a large mural on the old gymnasium at the South Whidbey Community Center.

Police continue to investigate the case and urge perpetrators to turn themselves in.
