Swimmers swamp Stanwood

Rousing cheers by Oak Harbor competitors at the conclusion of the meet told most the story along with victory a dip in the hot tub and cupcakes provided a proud parent.

On Tuesday, the Oak Harbor girls swim team picked up its second victory of the season defeating Stanwood 99-77 at Vanderzicht Pool. The Lady Wildcats won every event except two, the 200-meter medley relay and the 100-meter breaststroke, but Stanwood kept the score close with swimmers finishing second and third in most of the races.Julia Marriott won two individual events, the 200-and 500-meter freestyle, and swam the lead off and anchor legs, respectively, on the winning 400-and 200-meter freestyle relay teams.

The senior co-captain blew away the competition with a time of 2:20.35 in the 200 freestyle, taking a seven body-length lead at the 100-meter split.

“I did a little better than I ex-pected,” she said. “I never, ever swim that race, but I do enjoy swimming it every now and again. It was a lot better than I thought it would end up being.”

Carolyn Vasquez won the 200-meter individual medley and the 100-meter breaststroke, and was also on the winning freestyle relay teams.

“I had a little trouble with my breaststroke in the individual medley, but it came out all right.” Her winning time in the event was 2:53.09.

Freshman Kim Klieman won 50 freestyle in a time of 31.52.

“This is my first win this year and it feels good,” she said. Klieman also placed second in the 100-meter freestyle.

Just a sophomore, KeriAnne Wright won the 100-meter butterfly in a time of 1:15.33 and also swam on the winning relay teams. She was also the lead-off swimmer in the 200-meter freestyle relay.

“I did good, but I want to go faster,” she said, regarding her time in the butterfly.

Senior co-captain Meg Gale won the 100 freestyle in time of 1:10.68, despite a continuing ear problem that caused her to sit out Monday’s practice session.

“I dropped two seconds from my last meet, I did pretty good,” she said.

Gale swam the anchor leg on the 400-meter freestyle relay team, was a member of the 200-meter freestyle team and placed second in the 100-meter breaststroke

“The girls did good and you can tell they are they very, very happy right now. We’ve won two-in-a-row and I think we are going to win a lot more,” said coach Erika Miller.

The win was a sweet one for the young team and so were the post-meet cupcakes.
