55-plus volleyball

A new volleyball group for men and women ages 55 and older is being formed in Oak Harbor.

The group is open to all active participants 55 years of age or older in good physical condition, who want to enjoy the exercise, camaraderie and social interaction in the fun league.

The group will be playing on the first and third Friday nights each month at an indoor facility beginning Nov. 7.

Win a turkey Nov. 23

The Central Whidbey Sportsmen’s Association is hosting its annual Presidents Benefit Turkey Shoot from a 9 a.m. to 1. p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23, at the clubhouse, two and a half miles south of Coupeville on Safari Street just off Highway 20 and Morris Road.

The event is open to everyone and proceeds will go to a local benefit organization on Whidbey Island.

Tickets are $1.50 for each event or four for $5 and you can enter as many events as you like, one or all.

A one bird limit per individual will be in effect.

Events include six shots as a large bulls-eye target from 25 yards with any iron-sighted pistol or revolver. Best six shots count.

Briquette shoot from 10 yards with any iron-sighted pistol or revolver. Break the most briquettes without hitting the tube.

Shotgun at a turkey target from 25 yards. Two shots with the most pellets in the white center wins.

Jug head at 25 yards. Six shots with any pistol or revolver with iron sights. Most rounds in bottle without hitting the jug head wins.

Rifle shoot. Five rounds at 50 yards at a bulls-eye target using a .22 caliber rimfire with any sights.

Shooters ages 12 and under will shoot in a junior class.

Entrants are reminded to bring weapons and ammunition to the shoot. Anyone without a .22 caliber rifle or pistol will have one supplied by the club.

Legion baseball meeting

A mandatory fall league meeting for all coaches of American Legion baseball teams is scheduled for 4 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 23, at the George Baldridge Post 43, 701 Murdock St., in Sedro-Woolley.

All existing legion programs must attend with their respective coaches to be eligible for the 2009 American Legion season.

In addition, the meeting will be an opportunity for any new teams to register.

This is also an opportunity for coaches to bring any problems or complaints they encountered during the season and suggest any innovative solutions to better the league.

Island running club formed

The Whidbey Island Running Club, sponsored by the Whidbey Island Park and Recreation District, is a new organization formed to provide running opportunities for young people ages 6 to 18.

A new year-round running team is will extend the season for high school and middle school cross country runners and allow them to prepare for next year’s competition.

Runners are invited to come out and train for the Cross Country Junior Olympics and subsequent country meets scheduled for Dec. through Feb.

Beginning runners are invited to join the kid-friendly group where they can have fun and improve technique and fitness.

Parents are invited to run with the kids at no charge.

Beginning runners will meet on Tuesdays from 3:45 to 4:30 p.m. beginning Nov. 4. at the west entrance of Windjammer Park.

Intermediate runners will meet Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:45 to 4:45 p.m. at Windjammer Park beginning Nov. 3, where they will have the opportunity to improve their running fitness and speed. The intermediate program includes a variety of short and longer distances, including trail work.

Advanced/middle school and high school extended season will be held on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 3:15 to 4:30 p.m. at Windjammer Park beginning Nov. 4.

All membership is $20 per month regardless of practice group. There is no charge for the first two practices.

Participants in all programs may run in the Junior Olympic Cross Country Association meet Nov. 15, with the possibility to move on to Junior Olympic Regionals or Nationals.

If runners qualify and want to participate in the regionals or nationals, additional fees would apply. The fees would include, but are not limited to, meet and uniform fees, and USAT&F membership.
