A season record of 0-16 doesn’t mean a thing if a team consistently plays hard in every game and never quits believing.
All that’s needed is a chance to prove itself.
That chance came about on Friday for the Coupeville girls soccer team in the first round of the Class 1A district playoffs when the Wolves hosted Concrete.
A whole season of frustration and heartache was swept away in one evening as Coupeville blasted the Lions 7-0.
“The girls played hard all year and they deserved to win this one,†coach Kim Sherman said. “I’m very proud of the way they played, especially our seniors.â€
Britt Harpe scored three goals to lead the Coupeville scoring attack, with Alexia Hemphill, Haley Waterman, Kim Kisch and Carmen Houk scoring one goal apiece.
“The shutout was preserved by our goal keepers Olivia Anderson and Ashley Manker, and a resolute defense,†Sherman said.
The future is also bright for the Coupeville soccer program as the Wolves graduate just four players off this season’s roster.
Harpe and Hempill are just sophomores and Manker is a freshman.
The Wolves came back on Saturday afternoon at Mount Vernon High School playing against Meridian and dropped a hard-fought 3-1 decision.
“Meridian placed fourth at last year’s Class 2A state tournament and they have a good team,†Sherman said. “They were the number-one seed and we played a respectable game against them.â€
Waterman scored the lone goal for Coupeville off a corner kick by Caitlin Phillips.
Coupeville ends the season with a 1-17 overall record.
Sherman said the team can hardly wait for the 2007 season to begin.
“The girls are excited already after winning a playoff game and they know they can do it. It’s a good thing to build on,†she said.
