Editorial: Return Strow to Olympia

Chris Strow, the Republican from Freeland, didn’t even have an opponent in the election for 10th District State Representative until last week, when Democrat Grethe Cammermeyer launched a write-in campaign against him.

Cammermeyer is a credible liberal candidate for the Democrats and her write-in campaign gives the party faithful someone to support in this election. But the fact is the write-in effort is bound to fail, and besides, Strow has earned another two years in Olympia.

Strow is conservative but not in a doctrinaire way. He is endorsed by Association of Washington Business and the Washington Conservation Voters, for example. He’s an affable guy, willing to work both sides of the aisle, and that’s crucial for a Republican in a Legislature controlled by the Democrats. Last session he devoted much of his time to non-partisan issues, particularly putting more restraints on sex offenders once they are released from prison.

Strow shows great promise after only two years in office. Voters should give him a chance to grow by supporting him on election day.
