Primary narrows races for county commissioner, 10th District Senate

Democratic candidate John Fowkes got 1,061 votes, which is 29 percent. Republican candidate Dustin Amundson received 623 votes, or 17 percent.

Under the state’s top-two primary, the results mean that Amundson will be eliminated from the general election this fall.

State Sen. Barbara Bailey, R-Oak Harbor, is also ahead of her challengers, with 11,394 votes from District 10; that’s 51 percent.

Democrat Angie Homola, former Island County commissioner, came in second with 8,685 votes or 39 percent. Democrat Nick Petrish, a Skagit County resident, received 2,071 votes, which is 9 percent. He will be eliminated from the general election.

A majority of South End voters are in favor of a port-owned fairgrounds.

The Port of South Whidbey’s fairgrounds proposal is passing with 62 percent of voters. The ballot measure will make the port the new owner of the 13-acre facility and approve a 5-cent per $1,000 of assessed valuation tax hike.
