PEOPLE & PLACES: Parties fill winter days

Willard Edwards was the guest of honor at a birthday dinner for his 99th birthday given recently at Mitzel’s. About 25 friends came to wish him a happy birthday and to enjoy an evening of visiting and fun.

Former Oak Harbor resident Willie C. Espero has been elected to the Hawaii State Senate. Espero served in the House of Representatives for three years before being elected to the Senate in the last elections. A 1978 graduate of Oak Harbor High School, he also attended Seattle University where his oldest son is currently a freshman. As a senator, Espero represents the Ewa Beach/Lower Waipahu area just west of Pearl Harbor. His parents, Victor and Pauline Espero, were stationed at Whidbey Island Naval Air Station for three tours. North Whidbey Beach Rangers 4-H horse club is hosting a series of two fun horse shows on Whidbey Island. The show dates are Saturday, March 8, and Saturday, April 5, at Whidbey Equestrian Center in Coupeville. There will be concessions, canned food drives, tack sales and swaps, raffles and special horse treat sales. Show dates are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days.

Army National Guard Pfc. Christina Cooper has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, S.C. Cooper is the daughter of Paul and Maria Bigelow of Oak Harbor. She is a 2002 graduate of Oak Harbor High School.

Who do you know who has gone out of their way to help a family in need? To support a struggling family? To set up a program to help youth, or an activity to keep families together? Child Abuse Prevention Foundation (CAPF) is looking for nominations for this year’s “Honor Our Children” Award, which this year will include a youth category with a $100 cash prize for the first time.

The award is given to a person living on Whidbey Island who has gone out of their way to make Whidbey Island the best place on earth for children and families. Last year’s winner, Bonnie Linscott, was honored for raising awareness in the community about child abuse and neglect. The award comes with a $500 cash prize for the winner.

In December, Oak Harbor Soroptimists voted to make 4-H its project for the 2002-2003 year. Jan. 24, the club presented a check for $5,000 to 4-H of Washington as the initial gift. More than 75 percent of 4-H members are girls.

Joshua Sargent of Oak Harbor has been named to the George Fox University dean’s list for the fall semester of the 2002-03 academic year. To be included on the list, a student had to earn a 3.5 GPA or higher while taking at least 12 graded credit hours. A junoir majoring in accounting and business administration, Sargent is the son of Robert and Vicki Sargent of Oak Harbor. The school is in Newberg, Ore.

Jonathan Jansen, a senior at Oak Harbor High School, has been awarded an academic honor scholarship from Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa. He is the son of Dwayne and Debra Jansen of Oak Harbor.
