Louise Mueller Wright recently attended the National Massage Therapy Association convention held in Portland, Ore. There were 800 present for the classes and workshops, a “learning convention from all over the country.” Louise took a course in “Integrating massage into Hospice.”

Edith Wilson brought us the news about Buck and Wilma Wilson, who lived in Oak Harbor in the 1960s and Wilma taught school. They live in Elk Fall, Kan., on the Bohm Ranch and raise sorghum for syrup. Wilson brought the news of a Sorghum Festival 2002, and the methods used to produce the sorghum. Anyone interested in the process we will be glad to share!

Visitors this week from Bellingham were Lisa Hilardis and Cindy Taylor who spent the weekend at their cabin on Sunset Beach. The girls and their families recently spent a vacation in Virginia, where they grew up, visiting friends and relatives.

Congratulations go out to Mark Betz of Oak Harbor who graduated summer term from Eastern Washington University with a Health and Fitness bachelor of arts in education degree.

Festival of Trees will be held Dec. 6, 7, and 8 as a benefit for Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Island County and Citizens Against Domestic and Sexual Abuse.

Festival of Trees is a community celebration ushers in the holiday season and supports youth programs throughout Island County. The festival features a gala and auction, teddy bear breakfast, high tea and a community open house.

A gala and auction opens the festival Friday, Dec. 6 at 5:30 p.m. The black tie evening features the auction of the decorated trees and wreaths. A variety of auction items will also be available to bid on, new this year will be a silent auction on the holiday table centerpieces. Tickets are $50 per person, and can be purchased at CADA, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, ERA Acorn Properties, and Whidbey Island Bank at 3125 Highway 20.

The teddy bear breakfast will have two seatings on Saturday, Dec. 7. The first seating will be at 8:30 a.m., the second seating at 10:30 a.m. Families are encouraged to bring a new stuffed animal to donate to a child in a crisis. Tickets for the Teddy Bear Breakfasts are $5 per person and can be purchased at Alaska USA Mortgage, The Daily Grind, Discount Party Store, and Jones Accounting.

Catch the spirit of the holiday season with high tea Saturday, Dec. 7, at 2 p.m. Enjoy a cup of tea, scones, and pastries while Father Christmas and holiday entertainers serenade you with holiday favorites. Tickets are $5 a person; please call 675-3262.

Festival of Trees will conclude with a community open house Sunday, Dec. 8 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., everyone is invited to come and enjoy the magic of Festival of Trees. Participants are invited to vote on their favorite decorated tree and wreath. Holiday music and refreshments will be provided. Admission will be by donations, accepted at the door.

We’ve gotten word of some new recruits to join the ranks of our Armed Forces.

Bobby L. Mayes, Jr., of Oak Harbor recently joined the Navy for guaranteed training in the avionics program. He is the son of Glenda E. Englehart of Oak Harbor. Mayes will report for active duty in January, and attend basic training at Recruit Training Center, Great Lakes, Ill.

Air Force Airman Jason S. Franczak recently graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. He is the son of Connie Cox of Oak Harbor, and Edwin Franczak of Spokane. Franczak is a 2001 graduate of Shadle Park High School in Spokane.

Army Spc. Dennis Eelkema also recently graduated from basic training. He received his training at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla. Eelkema is the son of Kenneth J. and Diane K. Eelkema of Oak Harbor. He is a 1997 graduate of Oak Harbor High School, and a 2001 graduate of Central Washington University.

Western Washington University senior Trista Sandberg, daughter of Paul and Lori Sandberg of Oak Harbor, has been awarded a $1,000 CBE Alumni Scholarship for the 2002-2003 academic year. Sandberg has a 3.7 GPA at Western and is majoring in business management.

The CBE Alumni Scholarship is awarded to students in the College of Business and Economics who have demonstrated academic achievement.
