Sunday, March 7, Oak Harbor Emblem Club No. 450 performed their newly formatted installation of officers at the Oak Harbor Elks Lodge with Past Supreme President Joyce Hancock and her installing suite of officers in attendance. Emblem Club No. 450 was formed to assist the Oak Harbor Lodge of Elks, No. 2362 of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the USA.

Newly installed President Marie Akins expressed appreciation to the supreme suite and local Elks officers for their participation and enhancement of the festivities. Outgoing President Pat Cary presented the Member of the Year Award to Mabel Caldwell. Refreshments followed the closing ceremony.

Money earned at weekly Bingo games and annual bazaars permitted Pat to present checks of financial assistance to representative of eight local programs. The major project for the Washington State Association of Emblem Clubs (WSAE), is the visually impaired, or people of low vision. They help anyone who cannot afford to pay for eye examinations, glasses or surgery and to award scholarships for deserving, outstanding low vision students, of any age, to further their education.

Red Hat dis-organizer Louise Repoz writes:

They have been studied and questioned and word is spreading like red and purple wildfire. The Red Hat Society is a social phenomenon that began as a result of a few women deciding to greet middle age with verve, humor, and elan! “It’s about going for the gusto together, sharing a bond of affection forged by common life experiences and genuine enthusiasm for wherever life takes us,” Red Hat founder Sue Ellen Cooper of Arizona said.

Whidbey Island has, at last count, nine societies. All the groups have been formed in the last 18 months. The local Red Hatters have traveled to foreign lands to lunch and shop (actually Vancouver, B.C.), attended local and Seattle theaters performances, viewed museum art galleries, modeled thrift store styles, strolled nearby villages, tip toed through tulip fields, all the time eating and laughing in their red hats and purple clothing.

Sunday, April 25, was National Red Hat Day. The gals on Whidbey wore their Red Hat uniforms to church and enjoyed brunch at the CPO Club. Eden’s and More presented a program on hat design.

The local motto: “Life is a Canvas….Throw all the paint you can on it.” For more information visit www.red
