Junior, senior players sought
The Oak Harbor Youth Football League has reopened registration for the junior and senior teams.
With all the interest in youth football, the league has decided to try to add additional teams in the upper age groups.
Registration forms can be found on the handouts page of the league’s Web site at eteamz.com/oakharborfootball.
Anyone interested in playing should print one off and mail it in as soon as possible so draft camps and league planning can take place.

Swim lessons begin July 14
The John Vanderzicht Memorial Pool swim school will be accepting registrations for the second session of swim lessons beginning this Friday, July 11, at noon.
Classes begin Monday, July 14.
Lessons are available for parent/child, pre-school, school age and adults.

Fly fishing anglers meet
The Whidbey Island Fly Fishing Club will have its June meeting today, Wednesday, July 9, at the Race Road fire house south of Coupeville.
A get-together starts at 6:30 p.m. for get acquainted chit chat and the featured program begins at 7 p.m., followed by other activities and discussions.
Come early for a good seat. Members are invited to bring a friend and non-member guests are welcome.

Football, cheer camps July 19
Oak Harbor Youth Football is having a football agility camp for players ages 7 to 13 from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, July 19, at Fort Nugent Park.
This camp is for all players who want to learn more about youth football.
The cost to participate is $15 per player and includes a hot dog lunch and a T-shirt.
Pads are not needed at this camp.
Registrations can be obtained on line at eteamz.com/oakharbor football on the handouts page.
Also on July 19 at Fort Nugent Park, the league is hosting a cheerleading camp for youths ages 7 to 13 from 8 a.m. to noon.
Participants at the camp will learn more about cheer routines and team support.
The cost is also $15 per participant and includes a hot dog lunch and a T-shirt.

NWTA offers soccer camps
The Northwest Training Academy is offering a series of summer soccer camps that will allow players to fine-tune their soccer skills or help beginners be better prepared for the upcoming season.
NorthWest Training Academy is a local company on Whidbey Island. That is why we can offer the same if not better products for half the price.
All of the camps will be conducted at Fort Nugent Park in Oak Harbor.
The Fast Footwork camp is July 7 to 10 at a cost of $60 per player.
Footwork is all about ball skills and moves that you can make one-on-one and under pressure. There will be two separate sessions run for this camp and there are seven spots left in each session.
Session 1 — 9:30 to 10:45 a.m.
Session 2 — 5 to 6:15 p.m.
The Soccer camp is Aug. 4 to 7 at a cost of $55 per player.
This camp is for everyone of any and all skill levels. There will be two separate sessions run for this camp and there are 10 spots left in each session.

The Goalkeeper I camp is Aug. 11 to 13 at a cost of $55.
Basic and advanced training will be offered for all skill levels. There will be two seperate sessions for this camp, with eight spots left in each session.

Coaches needed for youth football
Want to have some fun this fall teaching young players the ins and outs of football?
The Oak Harbor Youth Football League is in need of coaches for the fall season.
Right now, there is an opening for a Pee-Wee coach for players 6 to 8, and also for a junior coach for 11- and 12-year-olds.
Anyone interested in helping out should call league president Mark Schroeder at 632-8416.
The league will probably be adding a senior team as well, so there could be the need for another coach for 13- and-14-year-old players.
Get fit this summer
Justin Ronning, physical education teacher at Crescent Harbor Elementary School is hosting a “Get Fit Summer” PE camp from 9 a.m. to noon July 21 to 25 at the school.
The cost of the camp is $75 per participant.

Tennis tourney in Langley
A singles-only tennis tournament for men and women ages 14 and older in scheduled for July 11 to July 13 on the South Whidbey High School tennis courts.
The cost to enter the tournament is $15 per player.
Registration forms may be picked up at the South Whidbey Park and Recreation office, and also at the Oak Harbor, Coupeville and South Whidbey tennis courts.

Soccer camp July 21 to 25
Joseph Supang, a graduate of South Whidbey High School and a former member of Seattle University’s mens soccer team, is hosting a soccer camp July 21 to July 25 at Oak Harbor Middle School.
The camp is for all players ages 9 through 18 and will be from 2 to 5 p.m. each day.
The cost of the camp is $120 per player with a $10 discount if a player has attended one of Supang’s camps before.
Skills covered at the camp include dribbling, receiving, turning under pressure and passing. Also included will be drills on attacking and defending, including one-onpone defense, group defense and heading.
Supang has extensive playing experience and is a member of the Seattle Wolves FC, played on the Botswana National Team in 2007, played professional soccer in Europe and was a member of the Seattle Sounders Select Team in 2002.

Sign up now for triathlon
The North Whidbey Park and Recreation Department presents the Whidbey Island Junior Sprint Triathlon on Sunday, Aug. 10, beginning at 4 p.m.
The event is open to boys and girls ages 6 to 12, and men and women of any age, with relay teams composed of competitors of any age.
Competition is divided into categories for 6- to-12-year-old boys and girls, and an open category for older boys and girls along with men and women.
Competition will consist of swimming 10 widths of the pool, 147 yards, bicycling five laps, a distance of 2,000 yards, and finally a 600-yard run.
The bicycle race will be held on a closed course on grass and a helmet is required.
Special awards will be presented to the first three finishers in each division.
The cost to enter is $10 per person and includes a T-shirt and dessert after the event.
The cost to participate in the relay is $30 per team.
Preregistration is required by Aug. 1.

VFW golf tourney July 19
The 14th annual VFW Post 7392 Scholarship golf tournament will be held at the Gallery Golf Course Saturday, July 19.
The event kicks off with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
Everyone is invited to come out and enjoy an 18-hole round of golf and then head off for the V-Dome at the VFW Post at 3037 N. Goldie Road for a real summer-time picnic.
At the picnic, golfers eat for free and their guests can join in the for just $5.
Entry fee for the golf tournament is $50 per person and includes green fees. All proceeds benefit the VFW Post 7392 Scholarship fund.
There will be prizes, KP’s on all par 3 holes, longest drive on hole No. 2 and a Chipping Pot at the V-Dome.
The tournament format is Modified-Peoria Handicap six Blind Holes.

Hobie Cat races
Hobie Class Association of North America is hosting a Hobie Catamaran area championship July 19 and 20.
This is one of only five such events that takes place in North America every year.
Racing will take place out of Penn Cove and the event will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days.
The Hobie Cats will be located in the city park in Oak Harbor prior to and after the races for viewing by the public.

Youth sailing lessons at marina
The final session of beginning and intermediate youth sailing lessons for the summer are being offered by the Oak Harbor Youth Sailing Foundation at the Oak Harbor Marina.
Participants, ages 9 and older, will learn how to sail on El Toro sailboats.
They will learn the basics of rigging the boat, steering techniques, sailing rules, sail trim, racing rules, and boating safety.
The cost of each session is $75 and $12 for the sailing textbook which can be purchased at the first class session.
The camp will be held will be held July 12, 13, 19, 20, Aug. 2 and 3.
