A Navy helicopter and other Whidbey-based search and rescue personnel were called into action early Monday morning to help look for a person who jumped from the ferry Cathlamet after it left Mukilteo for Clinton.

Sergeant Trent Cain of the State Patrol told the South Whidbey Record that a 62-year-old Marysville man parked his 1978 Chevrolet pickup on board the midnight ferry and jumped overboard.

“We checked the videotape on board the Cathlamet,” Cain said. “He left his truck, walked around the car deck, looked over the side for a moment, and jumped.” The man’s name was not released.

The Coast Guard was called by ferry authorities at approximately 12:40 a.m. Monday.

A 25-foot small response boat crew from Coast Guard Station Seattle was dispatched to assist other responders including the State Patrol, South Whidbey Fire and Rescue, a helicopter crew from Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, and Edmonds and Everett rescue crews.

The search was called off later Monday morning. The Coast Guard asks any mariner that sees signs of a body on the water to call their local Coast Guard unit or 911 immediately.
