A North Whidbey man is accused of breaking into an ex-girlfriend’s home through a window, preventing her from leaving and assaulting her Aug. 12, according to court documents.

Prosecutors charged Matthew C. Powell, 35, in Island County Superior Court Aug. 17 with burglary in the first degree, unlawful imprisonment and assault in the fourth degree. The counts were charged as domestic violence crimes.

Powell posted $10,000 bail on Aug. 18.

The police report states that the victim had told Powell not to come over anymore, but she woke to him crawling in through the bedroom window. The woman told police that he wouldn’t let her leave the bedroom but she was able to take shelter in the bathroom. Powell broke the bathroom door, grabbed her and wouldn’t let her leave for an extended period of time, the report states.

The woman tried to escape out the bathroom window but was pulled back in by Powell, causing injuries, the report states.

Powell allegedly struck her in the face with a squirt bottle, causing a laceration, the report states. The woman was eventually able to get out of the house and drove away.

The police noted that the bedroom window screen was ripped, the bathroom door was broken and a dented squirt bottle was on the ground in the home.

Powell denied entering the home through the window or assaulting the woman. He said the woman threw the bottle at him, he deflected it and it struck her in the face.
