Cascade crushes Oak Harbor with big first quarter

Visiting Cascade outscored Oak Harbor’s boys basketball team 24-3 in the first period on the way to a 90-66 win Friday.

A slew of early turnovers destroyed the Wildcats’ chances. Oak Harbor coach Mike Washington said that Cascade got confidence early with easy transition hoops and things snowballed from there.

After the opening period, Oak Harbor settled down and was outscored by just three points the rest of the way. The ‘Cats actually finished the game with one less turnover (17) than Cascade (18), but the damage was done by the first quarter failures.

Washington said, “We did not come out ready to play. We were lethargic.”

Oak Harbor did make a run at the Bruins in the third quarter, cutting the lead to 13. The hot-shooting visitors soon recovered and cruised to the finish.

The Wildcats shot a decent 42 percent and still lost by 24 points.

Cascade shot an incredible 68.9 percent from the field. Washington said, “They got some open looks,” but they also hit some really tough shots.

Chris McGrath, the league’s best shooter, finished with 26 points for the Bruins. Johnnie Hilliard had 21.

Mike Washington Jr. recorded a game-high 27 (four 3’s) for Oak Harbor. Denzel Harden was next with 13, Jay Stout had nine, Colby Anter eight, Ryan Fakkema four, Trace Paul three and Rashaad Smith two.

The Wildcats have a big week ahead: Tuesday they travel to Snohomish, Thursday they go to Everett and Friday they host Lake Stevens in three league games.

Oak Harbor is now 1-3, 0-1 for the year.
