The intersection of Ely Street and Barrington Drive was all broken glass and crushed metal Monday afternoon after a black Honda Accord reportedly ran a stop sign heading north bound on Ely, according to Oak Harbor Police Sgt. John Dyer.
The vehicle reportedly proceeded through the stop and headed into the intersection at a high rate of speed.
“They blew the stop sign,” Dyer said of the female driver. A female passenger was also in the car.
A Toyota Sienna mini-van heading west on Barrington slammed into the Honda, sending it careening into an Island Transit bus that was waiting at the stop sign to turn west onto Barrington.
“When the van hit the car, it just shoved it into the bus,” the sergeant said.
Police and Oak Harbor Fire Department personnel were successful in bending the Honda door to extricate the young women, who were dazed but otherwise appeared uninjured.
With a little air in the tire, the Island Transit vehicle was able to drive away from the scene, albeit a tad behind schedule.
