Art & About

Here's what's happening in the Whidbey arts scene.

The artwork of Wendy Ferrier and Anne Smidt is featured in an exhibit entitled “Wax and Wool.”

The exhibit will displayed in the foyer ART GALLERY AT UUCWI during the months of March and April.

Ferrier is a weaver, spinner, dyer and knitter extraordinaire.

Some of the yarns she uses are hand-dyed and hand-spun.

Smidt works primarily with encaustics, both in paintings and three-dimensional work, enjoying the spontaneity of the process. UUCWI is located approximately one mile north of Freeland at 20103 State Highway 525 – on the west side of the highway.

Two Whidbey Island art groups, WHIDBEY WORKING ARTISTS AND THE WHIDBEY ART TRAIL, are seeking members and participants for 2016 events and tours.

The Whidbey Art Trail, now in its sixth year, attracts visitors from all over the world and includes artists who open their studios throughout the year as part of a self-guided tour.

Last year, more than 50 artists and galleries took part, and the event drew hundreds of art lovers. The tour will take place Aug. 27 and 28, 2016. A full color brochure is distributed every year throughout the region. To register, go to http://www.whidbeyworkingartists.com/registration-2016.html

“Felted Fantasies,” the art of Kathleen Dodge-DeHaven, will be featured at RAVEN ROCKS GALLERY during the month of March. Dodge-DeHaven is new to the gallery. Her work is colorful and whimsical, pieces that will bring a breath of spring during the last weeks of winter.

Carpole Dawes is the featured artist for March and April at OAK HARBOR CITY HALL.

Dawes began her painting career with classes at the Oak Harbor Senior Center with Joan Bresnahan and later with Dottie Sanders. She also studied with local and visiting artists at the Pacific Northwest Art School, of which she is a member.

She is also a member of Island Artists and president of Whidbey Allied Artists. She works mainly in watercolors and paints Whidbey scenes.

ROB SCHOUTEN GALLERY presents paintings and mixed media works by Buffy Cribbs and Bruce Morrow.

The artists’ works will be on display from April 1 through May 2.

An artists’ reception will take place from 5-7 p.m. Friday, April 1, during First Friday at Greenbank Farm.

Light refreshments will be served.

Rainy Lindell is PENN COVE GALLERY’S featured artist for April.

Lindell will be at the gallery from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, April 13, demonstrating her oil painting techniques.

A self-taught artist who favors landscapes, Lindell gets her inspiration from the skies, waters, mountains and wildlife of the Pacific Northwest.

She uses oils, the medium of the old masters, because of the glowing, rich, warm dark colors as well as the vibrant, bright lights. 360-678-1176. www.penncovegallery.com
