“A Moment of Silence†stands in the entrance of the CPO Club. This patriotic Christmas tree is a memorial to the men and women from the four branches of the armed services who died in the war with Iraq.
Chief Petty Officer Reginald Sanford accepted the tree on behalf of the Chief Petty Officers’ Club in ceremonies Tuesday at the club near the main gate to NAS Whidbey in Oak Harbor.
The tree was recently auctioned at the Festival of Trees, a fund-raiser for Big Brothers Big Sisters. Five businesses contributed a total of $3,000 to purchase the tree and then donated it to the club as a tribute “to NAS Whidbey Island, its service members and their families for their dedication and service.â€
The tree was designed by Darlene Davis, Kristi Krieg, Maria Haske and Danny Krieg. The tree was purchased by Chicago Title, Krieg Construction, Les Schwab Tire Center, P & L General Contractors and Whidbey Island Bank.
The tree is decorated in red, white and blue, with an American flag at the top. Hanging from the tree are insignias from the services, white lights and 52 paper ornaments, one for each state, plus the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. The names of the deceased are listed on the ornaments, along with the branch of service and the date of death.
Candles and a fountain are placed on either side of the tree, visual cues to encourage visitors to take a moment to remember the fallen. A framed statement explains the tree’s significance:
“As of Nov. 30, 2005, there have been 2,114 service men and women who have lost their lives since the start of the Iraq Conflict back in March of 2003. Regardless of one’s political position, these men and women are still our sons and daughters, our fathers and mothers, our brothers and sisters, our husbands and wives, our family, friends and neighbors.
“These are individuals who have given selflessly of themselves for our continued safety and freedom. They have given the ultimate gift of life so that each of us, and others in the world, are to celebrate another precious day. So as we embark on this festive holiday season that family so warmly embrace as a time of togetherness, let us remember those who have perished and shall be missed. In honor of their brave efforts while striving for the hope of a better world, please share with us and reflect on their courage and sacrifice during this moment of silence.â€
