Back pain be gone: The ultimate mattress guide for pain-free sleep

Expert tips for finding the perfect mattress to support your back health

Back pain is a leading cause of emergency room visits and costs an estimated $200 billion annually for symptom and treatment management alone. While a good mattress won’t fix back issues, it can help by providing proper support and promoting the deep sleep needed for recovery.

But not all mattresses are created equal. Which types are best for back pain? William Wellauer, co-owner of ESC Mattress Center, has some helpful advice.

“A lot depends on your sleeping position,” says Wellauer. “Side sleepers need something different than back or stomach sleepers. Good support is key, but that doesn’t necessarily mean a firm mattress; it means getting your spine in alignment.”

Proper alignment when sleeping looks like keeping your ears, shoulders and hips aligned. For side sleepers, a mattress that allows shoulders and hips to sink in is ideal. Back sleepers need lower-back support, while stomach sleepers should avoid hyper-extending (arching) their back.

Pressure-relieving foams can reduce tossing and turning by allowing shoulders and hips to sink in properly,” explains Wellauer. “Technogel or Latex are top-notch for pressure relief and if you prefer innersprings, a high coil count (1000+) can provide superior spinal alignment.”

Everyone sleeps differently, so there’s no one-size-fits-all mattress. Consider your sleep habits and consult an expert for personalized advice.

“Finding the right mattress often takes more than one try and that’s why we offer our sleepers a year to try any mattress $999 and above with no restocking fees,” says Wellauer. “It’s our belief that sleep is a pillar of good health and our team is dedicated to helping you get the best nights sleep possible.
