Editor,

We are writing in support of preservation and protection of the Garry Oaks in Oak Harbor and on Whidbey Island. This stately and iconic tree, our city’s namesake, is threatened by urbanization, development and loss of habitat.

Fortunately, our city’s Municipal Code has ordnances that serve to protect this ancient tree. In the very near future the city will decide whether to continue its protection or give into a developer intent on cutting down a mature Garry Oak on Melrose Drive to build townhouses.

We have a vanishing number of these great trees and the public must be ever vigilant in protecting them.

It is our view that the hearing process must reinforce Oak Harbor’s commitment to preserving the Garry Oak.

Please contact your city councilman and voice your support for the preservation of all Garry Oaks.
