Pool popular and improving

The North Whidbey Park and Recreation District staff is very proud of the accomplishments that have been made regarding the operation and participation of the John Vanderzicht Memorial Swimming Pool. The pool recently celebrated its 25th anniversary in meeting the aquatic needs of the Oak Harbor community.

In the last four years, program participation in lap swimming, swim lessons, swim team and aquarobics has doubled and even tripled. This has been the direct result of citizen support for Maintenance and Operation Property Tax Levies.

The Board of Commissioners has been able to authorize the expenditure of almost $900,000 toward significant repairs and improvements. Levy funds have also made our aquatic facility an affordable recreation option for the citizens. Navy personnel participation has also increased as a result of the base facility closure and support from Morale, Welfare and Recreation Services. Programming changes, special event activities and effective coaching and teaching has resulted in our ability to truly call our facility “Splash Paradise.”

While some people believe our facility is becoming overcrowded, we are always working to adjust and add to our schedule. We often encourage lap swimming participants to just wait five minutes and space will often be available. We believe there is still plenty of room to have an enjoyable experience.

Early last year, the Board of Commissioners established an Expansion Committee to investigate other facilities and evaluate potential options for our facility. A patron survey is underway and we encourage those who have been or are a patron to provide us with their opinions. Surveys will be available at the swimming pool through March. This information will be beneficial guidance in determining our future course of action.
