Since its inception in 1999, the Coupeville Thanksgiving Community Potluck has been a labor of love, food and sharing neighbor-to-neighbor.
I have been a patient, a volunteer and an employee at Whidbey General Hospital. As a patient, I received better care at Whidbey General than I received at one of California’s most renowned hospitals. The caring and advocacy of the nursing staff during and after emergency surgery was the absolute best.
It is refreshing for a change to have a local race like the Hospital Board, Position No. 2 and actually have some candidates you can really separate. Often there is such little information on the candidates I find myself Googling them to find any information I can on them.
I think the two incumbent members of the hospital board have had their chance to make changes to improve Whidbey General Hospital, and they failed. Why put them back in office and expect anything to change?
Are you the same editor who endorsed Kelly Emerson some years ago, saying in effect, “We need an outsider to shake things up?”
Just how did that work out? By the end of her aborted term, even many of her staunch supporters said “good riddance.”
I’m running for Oak Harbor School director because I’m passionate about kids, and about their education. I’ve been an Oak Harbor resident since moving here to fly EA-6Bs long ago. My daughter was born in the Navy hospital during my first deployment. I joke that she was born “at the airfield,” which I think is funny but mostly makes her roll her eyes.
I have read letters to the editor regarding the race for District No. 2 hospital commissioner. Many supporters of Georgia Gardner comment on her years of experience as a certified public accountant and her skills in government finances and budgeting. Yet, as documented by the state auditor’s office, the facts speak differently.
I recently had the privilege of sitting on an interview committee which met with each mayoral candidate for the City of Oak Harbor. We met with each candidate one at a time and asked the same questions of each candidate, giving them both a very level playing field to share their passion, objectives for the position, qualifications and explain their positions on important issues.
All too often I have run into one of those pet owners who cheerfully yell out, as his or her dog is bounding toward you with lord-knows-what intent, to not worry because it’s friendly as it sticks its nose into my crotch.

Do people still remember how and why our beloved Garry oak tree was cut down? Bob Severns was a council member and was part of the secret meeting the mayor had while Jim Campbell was out of the area on vacation. Not one council member went public about this meeting or tried to contact Jim Campbell about this dirty deed they were doing.
Last week I attended the League of Women Voters-sponsored candidates’ forum in Langley to assess the candidates running for Whidbey General Hospital Commissioner for District No. 2, Georgia Gardner and Rob Born, and District No. 4, Nancy Fey and Erika Carnahan.
United Way of Island County just finished a successful Instant Wine Cellar event and it could not have happened without the time and talent of many individuals and businesses.
