Kids can’t afford to play

I would like to know what is happening with Oak Harbor School District. Every year they seem to get in a bigger deficit. They keep taking away from our children which are the reason for having a district office.

I understand that this school year has made school sports a rich man’s sport. If you have money you play and if you do not have money you do not play. To me this is a way of discriminating against low income families or large families.

For me with two children in high school it would cost me $370 for my kids to play sports for the year plus it would cost me another $250 for my other two kids in middle school to play. This is something way out of my budget especially with the price of gas increasing every day.

This is not the way to get out of this deficit. The children in Oak Harbor do not have very much to do on this island and now with this problem they will be roaming the streets more. The children that tried to get those passing grades to be able to play in sports will no longer have that incentive to keep up their grades.

If we want the schools from our island to win these sports against other schools and look good, then this has to be stopped because this will prevent good players from playing due to money. Instead of making this change, maybe the superintendent should not receive his nine-percent pay raise for this year. I do not believe he has earned it. Instead of getting the district out of their deficit, he keeps getting us deeper and deeper.
