Scout Smith hit a game-winning three-point shot in the final minute as the Coupeville High School girls basketball won 34-33 at Granite Falls Monday, Jan. 20.

Granite Falls hit a long two-point field goal to go up 33-31 with about a minute left in the game, then Smith countered with her three-pointer to give the Wolves the win.

The Tigers turned the ball over in their next possession and fouled a Coupeville player with three seconds left. The free throw was offline and Granite Falls rebounded and called time out. The Tigers set up a play and got off a shot, but the attempt was wide right and the Wolves escaped with the victory.

“On a day when nothing went right, we managed to pull out a 1-point win,” Coupeville coach Scott Fox said. “Probably a little let down from the South Whidbey win (Friday) — we were flat and never got in a groove — but we’ll take the win.”

The game was close throughout as the teams were tied 12-12 after the first quarter and 16-16 at halftime. Coupeville led by just one, 23-22, going into the fourth quarter.

Smith finished with 17 points, 9 coming in the decisive final period. Avalon Renninger scored 10, Hannah Davidson 5 and Maddie Georges 2.

Coupeville (4-1, 9-3) remained in the hunt for the North Sound Conference title with the win over Granite Falls (0-5, 3-13), which is winless in league action.

The Wolves go to Cedar Park Christian (5-1, 11-5) at 5:15 p.m. Friday, Jan. 24. The Eagles are the only conference team to beat Coupeville so far this year, winning 51-35 Jan. 7.
